Feed Wild Dolphins!
The Island of Tangalooma is
a great place to get up and personal with flora and fauna.
The resort in particular provides a unique venue for the hand
feeding of wild dolphins.
The dolphins come to the beach in the evening around 7pm
and can be hand fed.
Tangalooma is one of only a few places earth wide where
people can get close to dolphins in their natural habitat.
Feeding takes place on the beaches at night.
Information on the Bottlenose Dolphins:
The Bottlenose Dolphin has a gray skin. It varies from dark
gray at the top near the dorsal fin to very light gray and
almost white at the underside. Adult dolphins range in length
from 2.1 to 4.2 metres and in weight from 130 to 630 kilos.
The size of a dolphin appears to vary considerably with habitat.
The colour of the dolphin makes it hard to see, both from
above and below when swimming.
Its elongated upper and lower jaws form what is called a
rostrum, or beak-like snout, which gives the animal its common
name. The flukes (lobes of the tail) and dorsal fin are formed
of dense connective tissue and do not contain bones or muscle.
The real, functional, nose is the blowhole on top of its
head; in fact the nasal septum is visible when the blowhole
is open. Its face shows a characteristic "smile"
but that does not mean it is happy since it is unable to move
its jaw to any other position.
Female Bottlenose Dolphins live for about 45 years, whereas
males rarely live more than 35 years.
